# Initiatives

> Connect several projects or programs to one outcome, plan its target broadly, and nest related outcomes.

An Initiative explains why several efforts belong together. Create one such as “Grow revenue” or
“Open a second location” to connect the Projects and Programs that support the outcome.

## Connect work without moving it

An Initiative does not contain Tasks. One Project can support several Initiatives, and one
Initiative can span several Programs and Projects. The Initiative rolls up health from the linked
work.

## Choose a useful target

Set a precise day, month, quarter, half-year, or year. Broad periods use the workspace's fiscal
calendar, so you can record “Q3” without inventing a day-level commitment.

## Nest outcomes

Nest Initiatives when one outcome supports another. An admin sets the maximum depth under
**Settings → Work structure**. Reducing the maximum does not discard existing links.

A cross-workspace link records a relationship. It does not grant access to the other workspace.

Use a [Program](/docs/guides/concepts/programs) when people need to add Tasks directly to ongoing work.
